💡The Future is Now: Game-Changing Strategies for Telecom Sustainability

The final day of the MCMC Academy CTPR Masterclass concluded with an action-oriented Panel Discussion: Driving Sustainability in Telecommunication!

ESGAM President, Adj. Prac. Prof. Cheah Kok Hoong, was honored to join this powerful session, moderated by Mr. Zulfadli Amin (MCMC), alongside:
* Mr. Niall Magennis (Senior Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs, GSMA)
* Ms. Shohinee Ghosh (Head of Sustainability, Axiata Group Berhad)
* Dr. Sumitra Nair (Adjunct Professor, APU)
* Ms. Nurasyikin Rosni (General Manager of Sustainability, TM)

Top 3 Takeaways from the Expert Discussion:
1. Data is the Starting Line, Not the Finish Line:
Before any target setting, the first step must be accurate carbon emission measurement, backed by third-party validation. Industry best practice is to leverage automation in data collection to build integrity and a reliable roadmap (like those guided by SBTI principles).

2. Regulators Must Become Enablers of Innovation:
The call was clear: regulators must move beyond enforcement. The focus should be on enabling R&D and innovation and establishing a shared national agenda for the sector. This alignment will unlock partnerships, refine KPIs, and make sustainability scalable.

3. The Future is in Monetizing Carbon Savings:
Sustainability is a financial opportunity. Industry leaders must explore how digital tools and AI help other sectors reduce their emissions (carbon savings). Quantifying these cross-sector reductions is the key to creating new business models, converting savings into carbon credits, and moving toward monetization.

A huge thank you to MCMC for hosting this vital Masterclass under the theme “Intelligent Connectivity,” bringing together diverse voices to build a stronger, greener future for the region!
