Prof. Shareen Advocates for Urgent ESG Adoption at 2nd International ESG Forum 2024 by UTAR

On 5th June 2024, Prof. Shareen Abdul Ghani, Honorary Advisor of ESGAM and Managing Director and Founder of Sorga Innovation, delivered an engaging talk at the virtual 2nd International ESG Forum 2024 organized by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. Addressing over 100 attendees, Prof. Shareen discussed the critical need for transitioning to a circular economy and sustainable supply chains to mitigate severe environmental impacts. She highlighted the stark contrast between a 1.5°C and 2.0°C scenario, emphasizing the urgency for organizations to adopt Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using Nike as a case study, she illustrated how businesses can achieve significant financial gains through sustainable practices. Nike’s innovations, such as Flyleather and ColorDry technology, reduce environmental impact while driving economic growth, showcasing the tangible benefits of integrating sustainability into business strategies.

Prof. Shareen’s presentation was a compelling call to action for businesses to integrate sustainability into their core strategies. She urged organizations to move beyond traditional linear economies to circular models that maximize resource use and minimize waste. Highlighting Nike’s commitment to sustainability—from diverting 92% of waste from landfills to eliminating water and chemical use in fabric dyeing—she demonstrated how sustainable practices not only enhance environmental stewardship but also improve financial performance. The forum emphasized the critical role businesses play in shaping a sustainable future and the importance of innovative solutions and strategic planning in achieving this goal. Now is the time for companies to act decisively and embrace sustainable practices to ensure long-term environmental and economic resilience.
